Common name of calcium oxide is Quicklime or burnt lime or un-slaked lime or pebble lime or calcia. It is also known as Safedi or Chuna in local market. It is an amorphous white solid with a high melting point of 2600. It is obtained by calcining (controlled heating - time and temperature) limestone at temperatures above 900C. Its chemical formula is CaO
Properties:
It is a very stable compound and withstands high temperatures. In the presence of water, it forms slaked lime. This process is called the slaking of lime.
Uses:
· As an additive for poultry feed
· Calcium oxide is used to regenerate sodium hydroxide from sodium carbonate in the chemical recovery at Kraft pulp mills.
· In the construction industry, where it is used to make plaster, mortar, stucco, bricks, and other building materials
· It is used in the manufacturing of cement, paper, and high-grade steel
· In water treatment plants, to control acidity of the water being treated and to remove impurities present in the water
· It is used as a reagent in laboratories for dehydration, precipitation reaction, etc.
